Who should apply
VPI Membership is intended for governments; companies in the industries of extracting, harvesting, developing natural resources, or energy; and NGOs working to advance the human rights or other important norms relevant to the Voluntary Principles. There is also a category for Observers such as international organizations, and industry and trade associations. At this time, individuals, consulting firms, security companies, and educational institutions are not eligible for Membership.
How to apply
Applicants must first demonstrate that they meet the entry criteria for the category they are applying to. The Admission Frameworks provide further details and guidance on each category’s entry requirements and application process.
Please note that the Framework for Admission of New NGOs has been updated to include a clarified definition of an NGO. Prospective NGO applicants should review the updated framework carefully to ensure they fall within the criteria before applying.

About the VPI
The Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights are an internationally recognized set of principles that guide companies on how to conduct their security operations while ensuring respect for human rights. To promote implementation of the Principles, the Voluntary Principles Initiative (VPI) was created. The Initiative is comprised of over 75 Members and Observers including companies, governments, and non-governmental organizations that share best practices and mutually support the implementation of the Principles.
