Policy Analyst

The Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights are designed to guide companies in maintaining the safety and security of their operations within an operating framework that ensures respect for human rights and individual freedoms.  The Ottawa-based Secretariat for this global multi-stakeholder initiative is seeking a self-starting, full-time policy researcher and analyst to join our small team and support work to strengthen the on-the-ground human rights practices of companies in collaboration with businesses, governments and civil society.


This position will support the Head of Secretariat as well as the activities of a number of multi-stakeholder working groups internationally and at the country-level.  It is anticipated that the position will include the following roles: 

  • Provide well-researched analytical policy briefs on thematic issues related to business and human rights best practices, such as gender-based violence, protection of human rights defenders, etc 

  • Support complex policy development processes 

  • Assist with the production of tools and guidelines for companies and other stakeholders that reflect best human rights practices 

  • Compile and synthesize information received from stakeholders 

  • Develop indicators and other tools to measure implementation and/or impact of guidelines 

  • Provide other support as required, for example to plenary and retreat preparation, programming funds 




  • Excellent research, analytical and writing skills 

  • Advanced university degree in a relevant field such as political science, sociology, law, etc. 

  • Experience working as a policy analyst 

  • Excellent communication, presentation, interpersonal, time management, organizational and problem-solving skills 

  • Knowledge of business and human rights instruments, policies and practices 

  • Strong English language skills  

  • Eligibility to work in Canada 


Asset Qualifications: 

  • Knowledge and experience in programming funds related to development or human rights capacity-building 

  • Knowledge of the global human rights movement 

  • Experience working in a multi-stakeholder context 

  • Experience working in or with citizens of the Global South, particularly in Africa and/or Latin America 

  • Language skills such as French, Spanish or Portuguese  

The position is available immediately.  We offer a competitive salary and generous benefits package to the successful applicant. It is expected that the work will involve international travel 1-3 times per year
